 GEORGIA RADIOLOGIST LAUNCHES COMPANY

TO IMPROVE PATIENT COMMUNICATION

LightBulb Radiology Provides Online Face-to-face Imaging Consults Between Patient and Radiologist

 December 14,  2015

Columbus, GA -
Millions of imaging tests are performed in the United States each year.  Although most of these exams are interpreted by a radiologist, patients usually receive their results from the ordering physician.  In many cases, the radiologist, as the imaging expert, is actually the physician best equipped to explain imaging findings. Lightbulb Radiology bridges this gap between the radiologist and the patient. "I came up with the idea after helping several friends and family members with questions about their own imaging, "says Dr. Rourke Stay, the founder of Lightbulb Radiology.  I found I was often able to give them a better appreciation for their imaging findings and what they really mean."

The site, lightbulbradiology.com, allows a patient to upload his/her imaging test through a secure network and then schedule a consult with the radiologist.  From the comfort of their own home, patients can see and understand their imaging test (such as an MRI, CT scan, or ultrasound) and see and talk with the radiologist.  This enables the patient to ask questions and empowers them to make the best choices about their health care.

"Whether it be a lumbar spine MRI in a patient with chronic back pain, an incidental liver lesion seen on a CT scan of the abdomen, or a PET scan in a patient with cancer, the online consult provides a great way for patients to understand what is going on in their own body," says Dr. Stay.

The launch of Lightbulb Radiology coincides with three converging trends in medicine: 1) the use of more accessible telemedicine platforms to deliver care (Google is testing live-video medical advice, Washington Post), 2) radiologists becoming more visible (Radiologists Are Reducing the Pain of Uncertainty, New York Times) and 3) the increased availability of radiology reports and other medical records through patient portals Helping Patients Stay Engaged in their Own Care, US News and World Report).

About the radiologist:
Dr. Stay is a board certified radiologist who trained at the University of Virginia and also completed a fellowship in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the U of California-San Diego.  His blogs appear on LightbulbRadiology.com and on kevinmd.com.

  OBAMA’S ADMINISTRATIVE RELIEF ANNOUNCEMENT

GEORGIA NOT1MORE IMMIGRATION COALITION RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ADMINISTRATIVE RELIEF ANNOUNCEMENT

Atlanta, GA. Today, the Obama administration announced that it would provide administrative relief to up to five million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, including parents of U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents who have lived in the United States for five years or longer if they register, pass a background check, and pay taxes; and expands deferred action for undocumented youth who arrived before January 1, 2010. The administration has also provided for new options for modernized visa processing, visas for foreign entrepreneurs, and STEM professionals. Individuals eligible for administrative relief will be eligible to stay in the United States without fear of deportation and for work authorization.

The administration’s announcement also focused its intent to shift enforcement resources to the border, and to focus enforcement on national security threats, serious convicted criminals, and recent border crossers. Notably, it will implement a new “Priority Enforcement Program” which replaces the former “Secure Communities” program, to remove those convicted of federal crimes.

Members of the Georgia Not1More Coalition responded to today’s announcement.

“This policy change is the result of years of organizing by undocumented people, who, against many odds and with great sacrifice, came forward to insist on an immigration policy that recognizes the humanity of our communities. Because of years of organizing by our families and communities against an inhumane immigration policy, the President has finally recognized his responsibility to act.” said Adelina Nicholls, Executive Director of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia. “We celebrate the President’s withdrawal of the dangerous Secure Communities program that undermined trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement, but oppose the further criminalization of those who simply seek a better life.”

“This policy change acknowledges the humanity of those who work to build our cities, sustain our families, and build our communities and their right to remain without fear of deportation,” said Monica Hernandez, Regional Coordinator of the Southeast Immigrant Rights Network. “President Obama’s announcement marks a turning point away from years of failed policies that focus on profits and intolerance at the cost of immigrant communities,” said Xochitl Bervera, Co-Director of the Racial Justice Action Center.

“President Obama’s policy will protect an estimated 5 million immigrants in the United States, allowing them to live without fear of deportation and continue to build strong families and communities while contributing to our economy,” said Naomi Tsu, Senior Staff Attorney with the Southern Poverty Law Center. “This policy will not only help immigrant communities to overcome barriers to economic opportunity, but will benefit everyone in our state and country as a whole,” said Neil Sardana, Organizing Director of Atlanta Jobs with Justice.

“This is a historic opportunity, and we will continue to push for policy changes that protect all of those in our communities from fear of deportation, including those excluded under today’s announcement, including many LGBTQ immigrants, those without children, and those who may have encountered the criminal justice system. Our communities cannot be divided on a false distinction between the deserving and undeserving,” said Paulina Helm-Hernandez, Co-Director of Southerners on New Ground. “Everyone has the right to work with dignity, and live safely in our communities with the knowledge that we can return to our loved ones at the end of the day without the fear of deportation,” added Azadeh Shahshahani, National Security/Immigrants’ Rights Project Director with the ACLU of Georgia.

GRU named a top military- friendly university by Military Advanced Education

AUGUSTA, Ga.-
Military Advanced Education has named Georgia Regents University a top military-friendly institution in its "2015 MAE Guide to Colleges and Universities" that measures the best practices in military and veteran education.

"We appreciate this recognition, because our institution is committed to striving for new ways to improve our services
for our military, veterans, and their families," said Carol Giardina, Director of GRU's Office of Military and Veterans Services.

MAE's Guide presents the results of a survey of military-supportive policies at more than 600 colleges and universities which provides students with information about institutions that support veteran and military students.

This year, each institution was evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support, and online support services.

"We believe the Guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising servicemembers about their educational opportunities," said Kelly Fodel, MAE's editor.

GRU's services for veteran andmilitary personnel include the development of the VET-2-VET mentoring program, veteran discussion groups, and the GRU Military Resource Center, which is a one-stop-shop for service members.

The university also participates in several initiatives such as the Yellow Ribbon Program to assist military and veteran students to pay tuition at the in-state rate.

In addition to academic support, GRU has partnered with Fort Gordon and the National Collegiate Athletic Association to host the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship as well as develop leadership programs for student athletes.

This is not the first time GRU has been recognized for its military-friendly initiatives.

Earlier this year, Victory Media, a global military media firm, ranked GRU among the top 15 percent of institutions doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

This was the second year in a row GRU was recognized by the firm.
